I am very much into sustainable energy. However, I have never been a fan of wind turbines. The reason is simple: the noise. It is disturbing, annoying and sickening.

Home Made Solar Power

The demand for power supply increases day by day and over-consumption of non-renewable resources case sever environmental hazards. Hasn’t that already made clear that you have to change the practices we are accustomed to.

First and foremost comes the house you live in. Inefficient insulation or air leakage make our dwellings responsible for most of the green house gas emission.

But, clean energy products and technologies are being developed by science circles such as The Hydrogen Club at Oregon University. And some innovative products have already started to be marketted to end-users.

So, is the appealing idea of living off the grid possible?

It is much easier with new designs. Architects that hold responsibility for a sustainable future are preoccupied with green design principles such as site location and axis orientation. Ideally, sunlight would hit from the for six hours. Solar capture walls, airtight construction design, an advanced heat pumping system and having large windows facing south are other meaningful elements of a green design. With existing buildings, the choices are less, including sound insulations and solar energy systems. Today you can use solar energy at home for cookers, heating systems, lighting systems, dryers etc. and the demand for photovoltaic panel installments are on the rise globally. Before deciding for the system that suits you the most, it would be a good idea to consider the advantages and disadvantages of solar power. Apart from being cost-effective and environment-friendly, a major advantage of solar power is that those systems are easy to install and low on maintenance so they give you a good return on investment. The major drawback is, needless to say, relatively high residential solar power costs.

Most people consider shifting their energy consumption to clean solar power, but are relunctant due to the consideration for high costs. However, the real cost of solar panels is showing a tendency towards decline. Raymond Kurzweil at the Fortune Brainstorm: TECH conference in Pasadena, California, said that the investments and technological advances decrease and will go on decreasing that cost of solar power systems. As a side effect he adds, “ it’s environmentally much friendlier.”

Solar power is now providing 1 part in 1,000 of our needs, but that percentage is doubling every two years, which means multiplying by 1,000 in twenty years.
